Why a Finn

Have you ever fancied or wanted to get back into sailing a single handed dinghy? Do you want to challenge yourself and sail on your terms? Maybe you are just sick of sitting on the side of a yacht and looking for more activity? How about trying a Finn? We have great fleets that sail regularly out of Woollahra Sailing Club and Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

If you are over 90kg this is the ideal boat for you with great regattas and social events held regularly including the hugely popular Masters regattas.

You can come just for the banter and beers or test yourself against the likes of Rafa - Olympic silver medallist, Gold Cup winner and Masters World Champion!

There is a great range of boats currently available to choose from and plenty of support to get you started.

With the Finn Gold Cup and World Masters Championship coming to Australia in 2026 there has never been a better time to get into a Finn.

If you are interested let us know so we can point you in the right direction.

Services

About

The Finn was designed by Swedish boat designer, Rickard Sarby, in 1949 for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and featured in every summer Olympics until 2020, making it the longest serving sailing class at the Olympic Regatta.

The Finn Class has a strong international following, regular well attended regattas, fun social events and have well organised associations. Finn sailors are passionate about the class and always happy to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with others.

Construction

Modern Finn hulls are constructed from fibreglass (GRP) with most coming from the Devoti factory. Finn's are solidly built and do not have any commonly occurring defects. As such, Finn's have a very long competitive life. For example, Ben Ainslie used the same boat (Rita) over three consecutive Olympics (i.e. 12 years), winning three gold medals!

Modern Finn masts are constructed from carbon fibre with bend characteristics customised to a sailors specific body type and sailing style. This enables a wide range of crew weights to be competitive.

Sails are made from lightweight laminated aramid sailcloth.

Durability

Since hulls and masts are constructed to robust specifications and to high standards there is no need to replace this equipment regularly like in other classes.

Club Racing

Club racing is regularly held out of Woollahra Sailing Club. During summer racing is held weekly on Sundays starting at 1:30pm. During winter racing is held every second Sunday starting at 10am. Many also sail socially during the week or on weekends.

Boat storage for Finn's within the club compound is mast up. This makes going for a sail very easy with direct access to the harbour via recently significantly upgraded boat ramp.

State Regattas

  • NSW State Championship

  • Sail Sydney

  • Sail Port Stephens (NSW Masters Championship)

  • South Coast Championship, Eden

Interstate Regattas

  • QLD State Championship (very popular with around 40 - 50 boats)

  • VIC State Championship (becoming very popular - rivelling QLD)

  • SA State Championship on the magnificent St Vincent Gulf

  • National Championship

International Regattas

  • Gold Cup & Silver Cup for U23  (World Championship)

  • European Championship (open, U23 & Masters)

  • World Masters (300+ boats)

These events are hugely popular and often attended by local sailors. Furthermore, since the majority of Finn's come from one manufacture there are many competitive boats available for charter at these events.
